Pre-Work & Preliminary Call
Participants will complete some pre-work assignments, including a personal leadership narrative and the Student Leadership Practices Inventory, in advance of the first class. The week prior to the first online class, you'll participate in one of several scheduled conference calls to get acquainted with the trainer and other participants and discuss some of the pre-work.
Online Class Descriptions
Orienteering – Class 1
Participants get acquainted and get comfortable with the online learning environment at the beginning the program content. The class content begins by identifying the common actions leaders take to get extraordinary things done in organizations. We will name and describe The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. You will use your Student Leadership Practices Inventory (Student LPI) feedback report to get a snapshot of your current leadership behaviors and begin to create a personal leadership development plan. In your offline time you will explore ways to help students understand The Five Practices model and identify their opportunities for growth.
Model the Way – Class 2
This class explores the first practice by examining the characteristics of admired leaders and the role of credibility as the foundation of leadership. We examine the connection between clarity of personal and organizational values and commitment to the organizations you serve. You will identify specific actions you can take to build credibility with those you intend to lead. In your offline time, you will explore ways to introduce the concepts of credibility and help students align their actions with their values.
Inspire a Shared Vision – Class 3
In this class you will define “shared vision” and examine the qualities that engage others in a vision. You will identify a personal vision and begin to articulate it in a way that resonates with others. You will explore the power of metaphor and symbolism as tools to galvanize others around a shared vision. Offline, you will explore ways for students to practice articulating a vision that aligns with their personal values.
Challenge the Process – Class 4
During this session you will question the way things are being done in your organization in the context of the vision and values it holds. You will learn processes to look for new ideas in new places. You will understand and apply the concept of “small wins” as it applies to creating a climate of trust, support, and risk-taking. Offline, you will look at ways students can support and encourage each other to try new things, take risks, and break away from doing things “the way they’ve always been done.”
Enable Others to Act – Class 5
In this class you will learn the importance of involving others in getting extraordinary results. You will learn ways to build the confidence and competence of those you have engaged in your vision of the future. Offline, you will explore ways to get students to take responsibility for pulling people together and empowering them to get things done.
Encourage the Heart – Class 6
During this session you will examine your own capacity to recognize the contributions of others. You will learn what it takes for recognition to be meaningful. You will identify an opportunity to recognize someone in a unique and meaningful way. You will also understand the importance of committing to your personal leadership development. Offline, you will formulate a plan for continued growth as a leader and examine opportunities for students to explore their own and others’ leadership potential.
To become certified to teach The Student Leadership Challenge all participants must successfully complete all parts of the training program. You can either complete the full Certified Facilitator Training program, including all online classes, the two-day, in-person workshop and final assignments, or any of the Educator Training Online programs along with the two-day, in-person workshop and final assignments.

All final assignments and assessments must be completed by the designated deadline following the in-person workshop. All projects and assessments will be reviewed and evaluated by the instructors. Once participants have satisfactorily completed all requirements, they will be awarded the status of “Certified Facilitator of the Student Leadership Challenge.” A certificate will be sent directly to the participant and Certified Facilitators will have the opportunity to be listed on The Student Leadership Challenge website.
